2023/02/21

The 5th Okinawa Karate Academy will be held.

As part of the efforts to register Okinawan karate as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, a survey of events with “martial physical expression” located in each administrative district, so-called (Mura), has been underway.

The tug-of-war is a typical example of such an event, but it is also known as ga-ei, an act of showing off by groups of both sides, such as stick fighting, fierce clashes between youths, and singing fights between women. This academy will consider tug-of-war events and their martial arts forms of physical expression.

Date: Friday, February 21, 2023, 14:00-16:00 (doors open 13:30~)
