The Okinawa Karate Academy is a research and conference center that focuses on and promotes the academic aspects of traditional Okinawa karate.

The first conference of this year, scheduled for November 30, 2023, will concentrate on the significance of the karate demonstration at the prewar opening ceremony of Butokuden, Okinawa’s Budokuden. The presenter for this research report will be Mr. Ken Sonohara, the chief curator of the Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum.

Event Details: Name: Okinawa Karate Academy Date: Thursday, November 30, 2023, 14:00-16:00 Location: Training Room, Dojo Building, Okinawa Karate Kaikan Presenter: Mr. Ken Sonohara (Chief Curator, Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum) Theme: “The Significance of the Karate Demonstration at the Opening Ceremony of Butokuden, Okinawa’s Prewar Karate Hall.”

Built in 1939, the prewar Butokuden served as a center for martial arts competitions and instruction. The Okinawa Butokuden Opening Ceremony held in Naha will be explained in detail, with a focus on introducing important events and demonstrations of that time. Special emphasis will be given to the numerous karate and kobujutsu demonstrations performed by 27 masters, many of whom were in attendance, including Hayashi Pigajuro, Chairman of the Dai Nihon Butokukai.

This conference is made possible through related materials donated in honor of last year’s “Okinawa Karate Day.” The academy aims to deepen understanding of the significance of karate demonstrations at the prewar Budo Hall of Fame and the situation in Okinawa Prefecture during the war.

We eagerly anticipate your participation! Please note that the entire conference will be conducted in the Japanese language only.
